Kunst, Verein, wagen, Halle

Since 2004, the former Deutsche Bahn carriage repair hall at Stuttgart’s Nordbahnhof station has been transformed into a unique studio and production site for more than 100 artists and cultural practitioners. In the hall and the adjoining buildings there are ateliers, studios and workshops. The following art disciplines are represented here – painting, music, photography, architecture, baubotanik, theatre, puppet making, puppet theatre, performance, installation, curation, design, graphic and web design, arts and crafts as well as film and media art.

A new visual identity was developed for the reopening of the Kunst, Verein, wagen, Halle in 2020 – after extensive hall refurbishment. The aim of the design measures is to visually position the Verein as an institution in Stuttgart’s cultural landscape. The orientation system for the K,V,w,H site, which was developed and implemented as part of the redesign, also contributes to these aims.

At the heart of the new identity is the bespoke typeface Nordi Sans, which was designed especially for the Verein and is deliberately edgy and bulky. In combination with the striking colour and shape language, which is based on the aesthetics of warning and signal signs from rail traffic, an unmistakable visual identity is created.

This project was created as a team and in collaboration with Levin Stadler, Nam Huynh, Sven Tillack and Steffen Knöll. Project photography by Sven Tillack.
